This is the first venture of the
Claretian Missionaries of Northeast India in Agartala Diocese, Tripura.
Initially, Depacherra parish under Fr. Prasad Rao laid the foundation for the
Catholic Faith in Suknachari in 2017 with the help of the SRA Sisters from
Karbook. Later, the Claretian mission is pioneered by Fr. Janardhan Munnelli
CMF who reached Suknachari in September 2020 looking for the possibilities of
establishing a mission, after having spent an year of ministry in Holy Cross
School, Karbook, under Depacherra parish as assistant priest. A small chapel
was constructed and dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin
Mary on 19 December 2020 by Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro, Bishop of Agartala,
marking the formal arrival of the Claretians in the diocese. At present there
are 80 baptized Catholics, and they all predominantly belong to Tripura tribe.
With a view to provide better educational facilities in the area, Fr.
Janardhan, with the support of the Northeast India Independent Delegation of
the Claretian Missionaries, established Saint Claret School in May 2022 with 13
students and 2 teachers. The mission specific to this centre is evangelization
of people and education.
The new presbytery was blessed on 7th March
2024 by Bishop Lumen Monteiro, in the presence of the Provincial Superior Fr.
Pius Thuruthyil, C.M.F.
