HOLY SPIRIT PARISH, AMBASSA
Brief
History: In view
of starting a Parish, the land in Ambassa was bought in 1990 by Fr. Lourthusamy,
C.S.C., the then Parish Priest of Kathalcherra. In response to the invitation
of late Bishop Denzil, Bishop of Silchar, S.V.D. Frs. Valentine and John Paul
came to Tripura in 1990. In 1993 S.V.D.Frs.
Cyprian and Peter were appointed as Assistants
to Kathalcherra Parish, but stayed in
Mr. Sona Bahadur Bongcher’s house in Ambassa, and looked after the pastoral
needs of the Catholics in the area.
On 8th December 1993 the Sub
Divisions of Kamalpur and Gandatwisa
were given to the care of S.V.D. Fathers. On 16th February 1994, Holy
Spirit Parish was created as a Quasi Parish
with Fr. Peter D’Cunha, S.V.D., as the first Parish Priest. In 1995 the
construction of the Parish Church began and it was blessed and inaugurated on the 30th January 1996, raising it to
the status of a Parish.Presently the
Parish is spread in Ambassa Sub-Division
with tribes from Halam, Reang, Garo, Hrangkhawl, Molsom, Koloi,
Kuki and Debbarma in 17 villages.
In July 1995 the Holy Spirit Sisters (S.Sp.S.) arrived
in the Parish, in the then Diocese of
Silchar. In 1996, a School was
opened along with a Hostel for 23 K.G. children. The Sisters assisted the Fathers to take care of the
School and the Hostel as well as
treating patients in the makeshift dispensary. On 2 May 1998, the Convent for the Sisters was inaugurated and in
November 2002 the Girls Hostel was
inaugurated. The School was upgraded
to Class XII, a Higher Secondary School, in the year 2014, under TBSE
Board.
