Brief History:
The Kumarghat Boarding included students from Kanchanpur, Dosda, Gacchirampara
and Ananda Bazar areas of North Tripura. In 1994, Fr. Hormis John, C.S.C. visited
Gacchirampara and met the people who requested him for a School. During this
time, Fr. Lumen, C.S.C., the then Dean of Tripura, Fr. Harry D’ Silva and Fr.
Hormis went to Dosda to locate a place for the School, which somehow did not materialize.
Again in 1999 the people contacted the Priests in Kumarghat Parish to take care
of their education and faith. Fr. Felix Pinto, a Capuchin Priest who had come
to Tripura in 1999 made frequent visits to this village. From June 2000, he
started living in Mr. Nabin Ham Reang's house. St. Francis of Assisi Parish was
established on 1st September 2001 with Fr. Felix Pinto, O.F.M. Cap., as its
first Parish Priest, bifurcating it from Kumarghat Parish. In 2001, a School
was started in a bamboo house. The Parish, which was established with a few
Catholics from one village, has now grown into 9 mondolis.
